Marine & Industrial Rebuilds Aren’t Messing Around!
Marine & Industrial Rebuilds Ltd, Whangarei – case study
“It is way more efficient, cost effective and the products are really good’
We talk with Justin, foreman at Marine & Industrial Rebuilds Ltd about their use of QUICKSTOCK and the products to keep up with demand…

Tell us a bit about Marine & Industrial
Rebuilds and the project you”ve been working onâ¦
Marine & Industrial Rebuilds was established around 6 years ago in Whangarei. We specialise in marine, commercial fishing boats, normal fishing boats, pleasure boats, mechanical ” for all of those, gear boxes, transmissions, engine rebuilds, different gear boxes ” anything really. That”s the mechanical side, then there”s the engineering side where we”re just fabricators, marine engineers ” anything from new projects to old projects, modifications new and old. We”ve got two bosses, Derek and Sean, and we”re up to 16 employees now ” so we”ve grown quite a bit from the small company we once were.
We”ve recently been working on a major extension and refit on a Silent Wings luxury workboat.

What are some of the common consumables you”d go
through in a project like this?
From the QUICKSTOCK we do use a lot. It”s aluminium, so the 1mm cut-off discs for aluminium are a saver, they”re amazing. We use boxes and boxes of the fibre discs ” adding a little bit of lube from the lube stick we find they cut aluminium like no tomorrow. It pulls it back, makes it tidy. We also use the combination flap discs for finishing. Before we”ve used those we”ve used a lot of 36 or 40 grit normal flap discs as well. All the general gear you guys have got in there [QUICKSTOCK cabinets] we use it.

How
does QUICKSTOCK fit in with your production processes?
It”s simple really. We walk from the workshop in the morning, we know what we want, we come and get it, write it down, book it out and go to the job. Don”t have to mess around up-town.
What were your inventory processes like before
getting QUICKSTOCK?
It was messy. Really messy when I first started here. They guys would come to me ” “we don”t have any more cut-off discs” ” “well go down the road and get some”. Then there”d be the next one ” “Oh we need this” ” “well go down the road and get some”. Now, we”ve got it out the front here and everybody knows about it. Instead of coming to me and saying “we haven”t got anything” and wasting my time, they can just come out here and grab what they need.
What made you decide to give the QUICKSTOCK
solution a go?
I”ve known Shane [Euromarc] for a while now and we”ve talked about it multiple times, and I could see it”s becoming more popular, so I decided I needed to talk to my bosses about it to see if they were interested in it. Sure enough, processes went ahead. It turned up, and it”s all going good. From what I hear the bosses are happy.

Were there any hurdles with getting used to QUICKSTOCK?
Not recently, but at the start there were. People just forgot or didn”t remember that we had it. Now that they know its here and we”ve had the system for a while it”s just flowing on.

How would you say QUICKSTOCK has improved your business?
The efficiency of it is the best. Time management ” you”re not messing around up-town all the time, running around looking for bits and pieces. It”s out the front, we”ve got it, just go get it.
Would you recommend the QUICKSTOCK solution to other engineering companies?
Yeah for those people that want it, they need to get it because it is way more efficient, cost effective and the products are really good.
