QUICKSTOCK™ Slotted Right In For Rivet
Rivet, New Plymouth – Success Story
“QUICKSTOCK has become very convenient, it”s slotted right in with our operations…”
We talk with Steve Dixon, Operations Manager, and Aaron Stevenson, Foreman at Rivet about how QUICKSTOCK™ has become an important part of their operations.
Tell us a bit about Rivet…
Rivet is a Sheetmetal and fabrication workshop. We specialise in Sheetmetal obviously, that”s the heart and soul of Rivet. Rivet”s celebrating its 30 year anniversary this year, starting originally as Scott”s Sheetmetal, a humble Sheetmetal workshop in Dave Scott”s garage. It”s currently still family owned by his son Steve Scott. 30 years on we”re still continuing to make products like large scale architectural installations like the award-winning Len Lye Centre. Rivet fabricate distilleries. We cater to the oil and gas industry locally, the food sector, kitchen benching, handrails, exotic materials like brass and copper, and really any unusual job that other people don”t know how to do usually winds up at Rivet. – Steve Dixon, Operations Manager
How did you manage consumable stock inventory before QUICKSTOCK™?
Rivet has tried a range of different methods of managing consumable inventory before QUICKSTOCK. The most recent option was to have an individual employee in charge of ordering abrasvies and consumables. They would try and place one order at the start of the month and anticipate what they were going to require. Obviously you can never truly know what work is coming, we would wind up having a shortfall and jobs would be delayed waiting on consumables to arrive. – Steve Dixon, Operations Manager
What were some of the challenges you faced before QUICKSTOCK™?
Before QUICKSTOCK our consumables were stored in the storeroom, and the guys when they needed a job done they would come to me. I would order the products online or send someone into town. Some of the challenges I faced before QUICKSTOCK was running out of items when we needed them, the downtime of the guys not being able to do the job, waiting on consumables, me sending out guys to get stuff when they should be working on things, and just general holdups. – Aaron Stevenson, Foreman
The challenge before QUICKSTOCK was that in Taranaki in particular we cater to a lot of oil and gas customers, and when we”re operating outside of business hours, if they ring me at 2 o”clock in the morning, I””ll answer my phone, if I ring one of my staff at 2 o”clock in the morning he”ll answer his phone. We”ll come into the workshop and perform the work, be it a repair or fabrication, because a drilling rig or gas production site can”t wait for us to open at 8 o”clock in the morning. Likewise if we have to tap an M8 hole and we snap our M8 tap we can”t go down to the wholesaler in the middle of the night and get a new one. So having the QUICKSTOCK cabinet has given us the confidence to know that we always have on hand what we need. It”s like having a Euromarc shop right there in our own workshop. – Steve Dixon, Operations Manager
How has the QUICKSTOCK™ solution integrated into your workshop processes?
QUICKSTOCK has become very convenient, it”s slotted right in with our operations in the sense that the guys in the workshop know how it works, they come and ask for the keys and tell me what they”re going to get, I give them the keys, they go and help themselves to the cabinet and they return the keys. We”ve never had any concern over staff theft or anything like that. They keys we really just use to monitor what consumables we”re using a lot of, and keep an eye on how much of an individual product the workshop is going through. – Steve Dixon, Operations Manager
What would you say is the best thing about QUICKSTOCK™ ?
The best thing about QUICKSTOCK is the ease and speed of it. It frees up my time with ordering things, the guys can just come to it and grab stuff when they need it. It eliminates downtime for me and the guys. It”s great. – Aaron Stevenson, Foreman
The best thing about QUICKSTOCK is the support we get from our local sales rep or account manager, Shane. He swans in here from time to time, smooth as silk, chucks a packet of chocolate biscuits to the office ladies, everybody loves him. He asks for a bit of feedback on the products and we give it to him. He listens. If we tell him something isn”t quite performing quite how we”d like to or not in line with the products we”re working on, he”ll explore different products that are available, and he”ll either add them alongside what was existing or swap them out. So the stock in our QUICKSTOCK cabinet really reflects what we use every day. – Steve Dixon, Operations Manager
